Secret copyright treaty leaks. It’s bad. Very bad.
The internet chapter of the Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement, a secret copyright treaty whose text Obama’s administration refused to disclose due to “national security” concerns, has leaked. It's bad. It says:
  • * That ISPs have to proactively police copyright on user-contributed material. This means that it will be impossible to run a service like Flickr or YouTube or Blogger, since hiring enough lawyers to ensure that the mountain of material uploaded every second isn't infringing will exceed any hope of profitability.
  • * That ISPs have to cut off the Internet access of accused copyright infringers or face liability. This means that your entire family could be denied to the internet -- and hence to civic participation, health information, education, communications, and their means of earning a living -- if one member is accused of copyright infringement, without access to a trial or counsel.
  • * That the whole world must adopt US-style "notice-and-takedown" rules that require ISPs to remove any material that is accused -- again, without evidence or trial -- of infringing copyright. This has proved a disaster in the US and other countries, where it provides an easy means of censoring material, just by accusing it of infringing copyright.
  • * Mandatory prohibitions on breaking DRM, even if doing so for a lawful purpose (e.g., to make a work available to disabled people; for archival preservation; because you own the copyrighted work that is locked up with DRM)
Please excuse moi while my head asplodes.

UPDATE 4/5 am: KBMT picked up the story (with video)

UPDATE 4/5 am: SETXhomepage (also with video)
True switch? I'm encouraged but skeptical.

From Blair Dedrick Ortmann at the Beaumont Enterprise:
"The following is a list of Hardin County officials who announced today they were switching their political party affiliations.

All of the officials changed from Democrat to Republican.

County Judge Billy Carraway
Precinct 4 Commissioner Bobby Franklin
County attorney Rebecca Walton
Sheriff Ed Cain
Justice of the Peace Butch Cummings
Constable Wayne McDaniel
Justice of the Peace Kent Walker"

Hmmm, is the ship sinking? Do these officials know something we don't? Did they see something in last night's election coverage that suddenly changed their ideology? Do they think we won't remember this in 2010? One has to wonder, doesn't one.
I don't live or vote in Hardin County. Just thought I'd share this for those that do.
Make a list folks. Take note and do some searching for voting records and political platforms. Let's just see what kind of republicans these officials will be.

Nubs: A Mutt, A Marine, and A Miracle

From Cassy Fiano's Smokin Hot Blog - Sorry Cassy, I jusst ripped this story completely from your site. I love a good dog story and I've been too busy at work and with family stuff to do any posts on my own. Besides, You and Cassandra are much better writers than I anyway.

"You probably hear a lot about the stray dogs that servicemembers find in the Middle East. The common theme is that our soldiers just love to kill those strays, because they’re bloodthirsty and mean and evil. It seems like that theme is more based in fiction than in reality, especially for one group of Marines. One dog even made such a connection with a Marine, Maj. Brian Dennis, that he searched the country for him, and Maj. Dennis fought to be able to take the dog he named Nubs home.
This is their incredible story.

When Maj. Brian Dennis of the United States Marine Corps met a wild stray dog with shorn ears while serving in Iraq, he had no idea of the bond they would form, leading to seismic changes in both their lives. “The general theme of the story of Nubs is that if you’re kind to someone, they’ll never forget you — whether it be person or animal,” Dennis tells Paw Nation.

In October 2007, Dennis and his team of 11 men were in Iraq patrolling the Syrian border. One day, as his team arrived at a border fort, they encountered a pack of stray dogs — not uncommon in the barren, rocky desert that was home to wolves and wild dogs.

“We all got out of the Humvee and I started working when this dog came running up,” recalls Dennis. “I said, ‘Hey buddy’ and bent down to pet him.” Dennis noticed the dog’s ears had been cut. “I said, ‘You got little nubs for ears.’” The name stuck. The dog whose ears had been shorn off as a puppy by an Iraqi soldier (to make the dog “look tougher,” Dennis says) became known as Nubs.

Dennis fed Nubs scraps from his field rations, including bits of ham and frosted strawberry Pop Tarts. “I didn’t think he’d eat the Pop Tart, but he did,” says Dennis.

At night, Nubs accompanied the men on night patrols. “I’d get up in the middle of the night to walk the perimeter with my weapon and Nubs would get up and walk next to me like he was doing guard duty,” says Dennis.

The next day, Dennis said goodbye to Nubs, but he didn’t forget about the dog. He began mentioning Nubs in emails he wrote to friends and family back home. “I found a dog in the desert,” Dennis wrote in an email in October 2007. “I call him Nubs. We clicked right away. He flips on his back and makes me rub his stomach.”

“Every couple of weeks, we’d go back to the border fort and I’d see Nubs every time,” says Dennis. “Each time, he followed us around a little more.” And every time the men rumbled away in their Humvees, Nubs would run after them. “We’re going forty miles an hour and he’d be right next to the Humvee,” says Dennis. “He’s a crazy fast dog. Eventually, he’d wear out, fall behind and disappear in the dust.”

On one trip to the border fort in December 2007, Dennis found Nubs was badly wounded in his left side where he’d been stabbed with a screwdriver. “The wound was infected and full of pus,” Dennis recalls. “We pulled out our battle kits and poured antiseptic on his wound and force fed him some antibiotics wrapped in peanut butter.” That night, Nubs was in so much pain that he refused food and water and slept standing up because he couldn’t lay down. Dennis and his team left again the next day, but Dennis thought about Nubs the entire time, hoping the dog was still alive.

Two weeks later, when Dennis and his team returned, he found Nubs alive and well. “I had patched him up and that seemed to be a turning point in how he viewed me,” says Dennis. This time, when Dennis and his team left the fort, Nubs followed. Though the dog lost sight of the Humvees, he never gave up. For two days, Nubs endured freezing temperatures and packs of wild dogs and wolves, eventually finding his way to Dennis at a camp an incredible 70 miles south near the Jordanian border.

“There he was, all beaten and chewed up,” says Dennis. “I knew immediately that Nubs had crossed through several dog territories and fought and ran, and fought and ran,” says Dennis. The dog jumped on Dennis, licking his face.

Most of the 80 men at the camp welcomed Nubs, even building him a doghouse. But a couple of soldiers complained, leading Dennis’ superiors to order him to get rid of the dog. With his hand forced, Dennis decided that the only thing to do was bring Nubs to America. He began coordinating Nubs’ rescue effort. Friends and family in the States helped, raising the $5,000 it would cost to transport Nubs overseas.

Finally, it was all arranged. Nubs was handed over to volunteers in Jordan, who looked after the dog and sent him onto to Chicago, then San Diego, where Dennis’ friends waited to pick him up. Nubs lived with Dennis’ friends and began getting trained by local dog trainer Graham Bloem of the Snug Pet Resort. “I focused on basic obedience and socializing him with dogs, people and the environment,” says Bloem.

A month later, Dennis finished his deployment in Iraq and returned home to San Diego, where he immediately boarded a bus to Camp Pendleton to be reunited with Nubs. “I was worried he wouldn’t remember me,” says Dennis. But he needn’t have worried. “Nubs went crazy,” recalls Dennis. “He was jumping up on me, licking my head.”

This is Maj. Dennis with his new best friend, Nubs:

When I read this story, I knew I just had to post it. It really just tugged at my heartstrings. It almost seems like destiny brought the two of them together, doesn’t it? For deployed Marines, the support of their significant other and their family can be what gets them through it. But you also can’t discount the difference a dog can make. Some people say that the dog chooses the owner, not the other way around, and it seems to certainly be the case for Maj. Dennis.

And of course, since we’re talking about a Marine… have you donated to Project Valour-IT? And hey, if you have, maybe you could forward this on to a friend and encourage them to donate. Remember, every little bit helps!"

Project Valour-IT Needs You To Help A Wounded Veteran

>> November 2, 2009

If you haven't yet done so, please consider a small donation to the Valour IT Marine team. We've managed to assemble a team of over 65 bloggers but it's tough for us to compete with the larger services.

Until yesterday we had a $2000 lead over the Army and a $7-8000 lead over Air Force and Navy. But our position is being overrun. We need reinforcements!

The devices that Valour-IT funds have a profound and visible effect on users/recipients and ALL money donated for Valour-IT goes to purchase and shipping of laptops, Wiis, and GPS devices (that means ZERO OVERHEAD). Valour IT provides powerful tools that help severely wounded vets (not just those with hand problems) speed up recovery and treatment, maintain a support system, and regain a sense of independence.

Valour IT facts:

• in 4+ years Valour IT has provided 4,100 laptops, over 30 Wii systems to VA hospitals, and  nearly 100 handheld GPS devices
• Total online funds collected to date: nearly 3/4 of a million dollars
• Every dollar raised goes directly to wounded vets military medical centers and VA facilities nationwide, such as:
o Balboa Naval Hospital
o Brooke Army Medical Center
o Madigan Regional Medical Center
o National Naval Medical Center (Bethesda)
o Naval Hospital, Camp Pendleton
o Robert E. Bush Naval Hospital (29 Palms)
o Walter Reed Army Medical Center

Here's what your donation can provide:
Voice activated laptops:

1. Help wounded vets connect with still-deployed fellow service members (relieve anxiety about how their friends are doing, allow them to maintain a support system)
2. Allow vets to stay in touch with loved ones who can’t be at their bedside
3. Run therapeutic computer programs that help restore brain/vision function,
4. Can be used to research treatments, keep track of treatment regimen.
5. Retrain for post-military employment
6. Voice control makes using a computer one of the first things they can do on their own

Wii uses:

1. Physical therapists in VA hospitals and major medical centers are using Wii fit systems with their patients
2. Motivation: Wii Sports games key into natural competitive nature
3. Track progress in a fun way

GPS uses:

1. For those with very severe PTSD or TBI (memory problems, high anxiety, etc), having a GPS increases independence and restores a sense of competence. Short-term memory problems can make it hard to navigate of new locations. A GPS can mean the difference between success and failure.

Please help. These men and women have already given so much. The price of a nice six pack of beer or an inexpensive dinner seems the least we can to in return for their sacrifices.
Thanks for your support.

Man's Best Freind

>> October 31, 2009

I came home Thursday night, strolled through the kitchen to the back door, as always, to check on my dog (Darth) Vader, and proceeded to watch that mutt kick the living sh*t out of whatever it was that fell out of the backyard tree. He had evidently been worrying the villainous intruder for quite a while, because as soon as Vader lost attention, for the split nano-second he acknowledged me, the tree hugger jumped down, and almost made it over the wooden fence. Oops! No such luck. (Thank you for playing. Tell him what his won Don Pardo!) My muddy mutt pulled from my grasp and tore that sucker up, whatever it was. Eventually, the varmint got loose, and dragged it's happy a** over or under the fence, thankful to be alive, and was free. I still don't know what it was. I don't care. I was proud of my dog's unrelenting  protection of his space. He showed no concern of the strength of the enemy. None. No thought of his own safety, or well-being, just primal instinct to protect his provider and his space. That's it.

This lack of self-regard caused me to think again of our selfless fighting men and women. This is, I think in essence, what they volunteer for and the ideal they strain and train to be: unrelenting protectors of their country, our backyards.

They volunteer to be dogs. Trained, disciplined dogs of war, Hoping, like any other dog that loves it's master or country, to be of use. In a dog's case, to fetch the bird, or herd the cattle, or protect it's master. In the case of the soldier, to take the hill, to hold the perimeter, or to root out the enemy wherever he may be, in short, to be an asset. Sure, a dog can't vocalize those desires, but if you have ever known and loved a dog, you can surely attest to the "willfulness to please" nature of man's best friend.

Disclaimer: While I certainly don't think of any soldier truly as a dog, or any animal, with some personal exceptions (you know who you are), I do admire the tenacity and audacity with which a soldier goes about their business. So, if any offense is taken to this analogy, please, rest assured that it is not my intention to offend, but to admire and to acknowledge the sacrifices given by those in service to our country.

Now, go hit the Valour-IT banner. Help those who, in the act of protecting us all, have given more than their fair share.

God Bless You All, you Dogs of War, you Protectors of Freedom.

HT Sharon for the photo of Vader.

Valour-IT - The Beginning:

Found this at Something... and Half of Something
"Project Valour-IT began when Captain Charles "Chuck" Ziegenfuss was wounded by an IED while serving as commander of a tank company in Iraq in June 2005.

During his deployment he kept a blog. Captivating writing, insightful stories of his experiences, and his self-deprecating humor won him many loyal readers. After he was wounded, his wife continued his blog, keeping his readers informed of his condition.

As he began to recover, CPT Ziegenfuss wanted to return to writing his blog, but serious hand injuries hampered his typing. When a loyal and generous reader gave him a copy of the Dragon Naturally Speaking Preferred software, other readers began to realize how important such software could be to CPT Ziegenfuss' fellow wounded soldiers and started cast about for a way to get it to them.

A fellow who writes under the pseudonym FbL contacted Captain Ziegenfuss and the two realized they shared a vision of creating libraries of laptops with voice-controlled software that could be brought to the bedsides of wounded soldiers whose injuries prevented them from operating a standard computer. FbL contacted Soldiers' Angels, who offered to help develop the project, and Project Valour-IT was born"

Remember this: "Every cent raised for Project Valour-IT goes directly to the purchase and shipment of voice-activated laptops for wounded servicemembers."
How many charities can say that?

Video Exposes Health Care Bill Written By Democrats In Secret

"...helps provide voice-controlled/adaptive laptop computers and other technology to support Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Marines recovering from hand wounds and other severe injuries. Technology supplied includes:

Voice-controlled Laptops - Operated by speaking into a microphone or using other adaptive technologies, they allow the wounded to maintain connections with the rest of the world during recovery.
Wii Video Game Systems - Whole-body game systems increase motivation and speed recovery when used under the guidance of physical therapists in therapy sessions (donated only to medical facilities).
Personal GPS - Handheld GPS devices build self-confidence and independence by compensating for short-term memory loss and organizational challenges related to severe TBI and severe PTSD."

"...It is comforting to know there are people who care so much.  After a year of surgeries, treatment and therapy, it can be discouraging. Although I am a trained attorney, due to TBI, it is unclear what my future will be.  The computer will help with my therapy and my transition back to civilian work." – Captain V, U.S. Army Reserves

TEA Party Patriots Contract FROM America Update: Need Your Help

I've suggested to the TPP-CFA the idea that big pharma spread their R&D across the world market and allow drug imports from other countries. As suggested in my earlier post. I didn't see it in the list so, it is there now.
If this idea is going to gain any ground, it needs some votes (ratings), so, those of you that are TEA Partiers or are interested, sign in or register here and rate/vote here (click on the "vote now" button, then click on the amount of stars you wish to give that suggestion. I'd go five *hint*). All of the other ideas that I listed are represented on the health care portion of the CFA pages in some form, so, no need to suggest them again (Although some do. Why is that? Read the list before you post something that has been suggested.) Also,  rate (vote) for your other favorite health care initiatives.
There are other categories as well. Check them all out.
I really like the idea of the Contract FROM America. It is truly grassroots to the core.

Republicans Are Losing The Conservative Base

Ok, check this out: I'm quoting a comment from the "Quote of the Day" section of Hot Air, who is quoting Reagan. My head is spinning. It's like one of those crazy mirrors where it just keeps getting deeper and deeper. Puleeeze make it stop!

"How much more clear can we possibly get, for the Party to understand our discontent, our disconnect, and our disatisfaction with what the Party has become? They are now trying to "brand" us as the "Radical Right"–this is why people are not identifying with the Party. They are trying to marginalize us, in the same way that Obama has done to the Republican Party. This the losing strategy of the Party.
What part of the saying, "I didn’t leave the Republican Party, the Party left me" don’t they understand?"

Get Government Out of Health Care

>> October 26, 2009

I am not a doctor. I've never played one on TV so, me speaking about healthcare reform is like Nancy Pelosi and a bunch of bureaucrats changing the entire health care system over a small, but inflated minority of people who supposedly slip through the cracks. Oh, wait. The liberals are already doing that aren't they.  Ok, so maybe if some legislators who know nothing can spout off, then I can too. I think I will. With the main rule being: "Get Government Out of Health Care". Quite the opposite from current events, don't you think?
Conservatives might be slow, but we are thorough. So, without further ado (or government intervention)...
Here are some ideas that I've heard and liked plus a few of my own:

  • Continue state regulated tort reform.  According to an ongoing NCSL review of state legislative work on medical liability insurance costs and medical malpractice lawsuits: "2005 State Activity Review - Medical malpractice tort law has always been maintained at the state level..."    "Traditional supporters of federalism have turned their backs on their states in favor of intrusive legislation that will nullify the work of their state legislatures executed over the last three years. It will completely eliminate any opportunity for states to continue to craft laws addressing further malpractice issues and formulating responses applicable to specific problems. Federal legislation will also mean that areas of law traditionally regulated by states – torts, evidence and civil procedure – will no longer be under the purview of the states, but rather the federal government." ~Emphasis mine
  • Offer employer provided HMO/PPO plans but also offer individuals alternative group plans such as community or profession based. (If state barriers are removed, I believe  competition will bear out these options along with others not thought of yet). Free the Free Market!
  • Offer High Deductible Accident/Disease Insurance (HDA/DI). With a HDA/DI you would pay out-of-pocket for check-ups, minor doctor visits, (like for a cold) and prescriptions (see below) You don't buy insurance to have your oil changed in your car. Health care should be no different.
  • Allow Personal Health Savings Plans to be tax exempt/deductible and allowed to carry over year to year. Accruing interest at the prime rate. You should be able to use this money for any check-ups or doctor visits or HDA/DI deductibles.
  • Privatize Medicaid and Medicare. (Awaiting the flame mail in 3, 2, 1...)
Ok, that's enough to get started. And it only took a lowly designer/drummer about an hour to compile.  Try that Nancy.

Q: How do yo tell a drummer from a musician?
A: The drummer drools a lot, and hangs out with musicians. parrrump splash!

Anyone care to add anything?     Bueller...    Bueller?

While looking for a graphic to go along with my assertions, I found this chart summarizing the state of health care coverage over the last 10 years. Hmmm, it seems that NOTHING has gotten worse in TEN years. In fact, according to these stats (adjusting for population growth) the amount of coverage has increased by one percentage point from 1998 to 2008. Which begs the question: Where is the crisis except in the minds of Democrats, those with their hands out, or those watching the MSM? I contend that there is no crisis. This debate is, and always will be about control. Sure, we may be able to improve the health care system, but not without doing proper Root Cause Analysis: Establish that there is a problem. Diagnose the problem.  Find the cause of the problem. Find the best ways to fix it or prevent the issue from arising in the future, if socially and fiscally possible.

And that my friends, is all I have to say about that.

Ciao for now.

Giving credit where credit is due. The top 5 news bureau chiefs banded together to do the right thing.
From Fox news: "The Obama administration on Thursday tried to make "pay czar" Kenneth Feinberg available for interviews to every member of the White House pool except Fox News. But the Washington bureau chiefs of the five TV networks decided that none of their reporters would interview Feinberg unless Fox News was included."
Are we about to see the MSM acting like responsible news outlets? I'm not holding my breath.

On the subject of Pay Czars - Fox also has a piece questioning the legality and reasoning behind this salary cutting business. (Hmmmm Obama didn't want FOX granted access to K.F. - coincidence?)

I for one am sick of the class envy card being played. Is this the only way that the adminstration knows how to operate? This is school yard bullying at best and jack booted thuggery at worst. What ever happened to an open exchange of ideas and the free market?
I also have to ask. Where will it stop? We are on the slippery slope here people. If you let the brown-shirts break into your neighbors house without protest, who is going to look out for you when they come to your door? I'm just sayin'
Time for a beer. Peace Out.

30 Republican Senators Dropped the Ball

WASHINGTON - DECEMBER 19: Former Halliburton/...Image by Getty Images via Daylife
via The Guardian - Here is the case of Jamie Leigh Jones, the defense contractor who was gang raped by employees of KBR and prevented from suing her employer by terms of her contract which "forced" (unfortunate wording) arbitration in lieu of lawsuit.

It would seem to me that if KBR in fact turned a blind eye to this situation that they were the ones who broke their contract with Ms. Jones and that she would still have the right to sue for damages.

I only bring up this case to point out the fact that thirty (30) Republican Congressmen voted against an amendment to the "2010 Defense Appropriations Bill that would withhold defense contracts from companies like KBR if they restrict their employees from taking workplace sexual assault, battery and discrimination cases to court."

Now I'm no fan of Senator Al Frankin,  but, I think the Republicans just missed an opportunity to do the right thing here. Never mind that they just gave the dem's a huge card to play in the coming elections. Maybe they didn't like the amendment's wording. At least argue for modification.

I'm open for comment on this.
Can someone show me where I'm missing the point?

I'm well aware of the fact that Halliburton and KBR are big campaign contributors. I'm trying not to go there but...

First, it seems the Large Hadron Collider is under attack "From the Future":
Scientists claim the giant atom-smashing Large Hadron Collider (LHC) is being jinxed from the future to save the world.
Hmmmmm
Time travelers from the future sabotaging LHC?
Or maybe it's a P.O.S. ?
Or something.
They are, after all, trying to find the "God Particle".
Does anyone remember the tower of Babel?
Just sayin'...
Here's the piece at FOX

Speaking of Babbling, here's an update on the WH Communications Chief Anita Dunn: speaking in Jan 2008 to a foreign government on the Obama Campaign's media tactics:
"Very rarely did we communicate through the press anything that we didn't absolutely control," said Dunn.

"...a huge part of our press strategy was focused on making the media cover what Obama was actually saying as opposed to why the campaign was saying it..."

Sounds like they haven't changed much since the campaign, just got a lot more power behind the message.

40 - 50 Million Killed - Anita Dunn is a BIG FAN!

>> October 16, 2009

Anita Dunn is a Mao Zedong enthusiast. AND a Mother Teresa fan. Hmmmmm. Interesting combo, 'Nita. Would you care to expound on those two extreems of the social spectrum?
Lets see. On one hand we have  Mother Teresa: Nun, Saint, Caregiver, Instrument of God.
For Comparison, I found this in the Wiki bibliography on Mao ZeDung - oops - ZeDong... "Death Toll Median Average Estimates of 14 Sources(!) = 45.75 - 52.5 MILLION people  let me think on that for a sec. FOURTEEN SOURCES!!? Do you think they are all in bed together? All Fourteen? And this is from Wikipidia. (not the most conservative source on the net, I'd say) another source from the same article...
"Mao’s responsibility for the extinction of anywhere from 40 to 70 million lives brands him as a mass killer greater than Hitler or Stalin,  his indifference to the suffering and the loss of humans breathtaking."
 Watch...

Is it just me or does she act like she's got cotton mouth? It looks to me like she just got back from doing a rail or a spleef! I'm sure it's all an act though.
Deserving of an Oscar for sure.

Hot Babes, 9/12 Tea Party Protest and History

>> October 15, 2009

What is it with the recent surge of Hot Conservative Babes in the news the last couple of years? We've got Carrie Prejean, Meghan McCain (RINO), Sarah Palin, Michele Bachmann, Ann Coulter, not to mention the ultra-hot/smart Five Feet of Fury (I'll let you figure out who she is). The question is: (there's not one really, I just wanted a good reason to post a hot chick pic) is this a new phenomenon or have these ladies been around for a while, hiding in the closet, waiting for the 2008 elections and 9/12 rallies to break out of their proverbial pant suit shells? It's just that I can't remember getting all worked up the last time I saw a female conservative / libertarian politician or pundit.
Just Sayin'.

Now that I've mentioned the 9/12 rallies, while I was ^ahem^ researching ^cough^ this post I ran across a large (read HUGE)  photo archive from The People's Cube and the larger (read HUMONGOUS) set of photos at their Facebook 9/12 album. I'm still wondering how just  12,000 people could have possibly looked like 800,000 to a million. Smoke and mirrors I guess.

If you're interested in historical pictures, documents or ancestral records there is a wealth of information at Footnote.com. It is amazing the amount of data they have on the site. It's like an interactive History Book! I highly recommend it.

History of Constitutional Decline

The U.S. Treasury building, Washington D.C.Image via Wikipedia
I've been working on an American history time line this week. A work sheet for myself really.  I thought it would be interesting to see the evolution of the constitution, in a format that puts the changes in context with historical events. Along the way, I've noticed the ebb and flow of freedoms and rights given and taken away. What follows is my top twenty list of losses of liberty. (Sorry to say, I couldn't keep it to ten).
In chronological order...
  • Early 1900's - Karl Marx's "Capital" taught in college in lieu of Adam Smith's "The Wealth of Nations" - The only one on the list that doesn't involve government. It is on the list to mark a beginning of a train of thought.
  • 4/8/1913 - Amendment 17 - Senators Elected by Popular Vote, States lose representation
  • 1917 - Wilson creates Food Administration, Grain Corporation, War Trade Board & Committee on Public Information by Executive Order begins World War 1 phase of extending government into virtually every phase of American life
  • 1933 - US ends Gold Standard
  • 1933 - FDR Launches New Deal - collectivism in full swing (One Generation)
  • 1934 - National Firearms Act
  • 1935 - Social Security enacted (Wrongly upheld by Supreme Court in 1937 misinterpreting "General Welfare")
  • 1938 - Federal Firearms Act greatly expands firearms restrictions.
  • 1965 - Social Security Act of 1935 amended to create Medicare
  • 1973 - Abortion legalized - giving way to more Social engineering
  • 1991 - Civil Rights Act of 1991 further expanding affirmative action
  • 1994 - Brady Handgun Violence Prevention Act and Violent Crime Control and Law Enforcement Act (Assault Weapons Ban)
  • 2001 - Patriot Act - encroaching on privacy issues galore
  • 2006 - AT&T, BellSouth and Verizon / National Security Agency - possible illegal wiretapping scandal - still no investigation
  • 2007 - The official number of illegal immigrants in the U.S. reaches 11 million
  • 2008 - Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac in conservatorship for $300 billion taxpayer  dollars.
  • 2008 - ACORN - politically biased community activist organization given $500 million in earmarks with FNMA bailout
  • 2008 - Bush signs TARP (Troubled Asset Relief Program) $700 billion bank bailout bill
  • 2008 - General Motors becomes Government Motors for $40 billion taxpayer dollars
  • 2008 - Chrysler bailout costs $30 billion taxpayer dollars

A Critique on Conservatives

>> October 10, 2009

I've been exposed to a few blogs and articles lately critical of Conservatives for perceived inaction regarding the health care debate or any debate for that matter. I would like to discuss some of these and offer some constructive critique of my own. (Can't let everyone else have all the fun.) *disclaimer* I don't speak for all conservatives obviously but I think I can make a few observations. Hey, I gotta get this stuff out now or someone in a beer joint somewhere is going to hear it. We wouldn't want that to happen now would we?

Here is one quote from "The Thinker" and "South Bend Seven" ~
"The whole modern world has divided itself into Conservatives and Progressives. The business of Progressives is to go on making mistakes. The business of the Conservatives is to prevent the mistakes from being corrected." — G.K. Chesterton"
Now I've never read G.K. Chesterton (adding to reading list), but, I'm inclined to disagree with a portion of this generality. While I detect a bit of a sarcastic barb in there (ala Dilbert), I think that a person who has conservative leanings may take more time than Progressives and J.Q. Public would like to absorb the information, form an opinion, make a decision and provide an alternative. (I left out "discover" the problem - IS there a problem? WHAT is the problem? WHERE did the problem originate?) It is the very nature of the conservative to not be rash, but rather, be methodical. (I wanted to say stoic, but that would imply a lack of passion and anyone that knows me, knows better. This is about me, isn't it? Oh.)

Dictionary.com defines conservative as: "disposed to preserve existing conditions, institutions, etc., or to restore traditional ones, and to limit change."
Pretty accurate I'd say, Who am I to argue with Webster? Although it doesn't say anything about policy, it does describe what I imagine a conservative person to be.

The Progressives count on this slow methodical approach. They paint it as either in-decisive or downright evil, turning it on Conservatives and using it like a bullhorn, driving through the streets of cities and towns with the mantra of "Conservatives aren't doing anything about -topic de jour- They must want all people to die because of it." blaring from the roof speakers. Once the argument has reached this stage, the debate has been transformed from a debate to a schoolyard name calling contest with the Conservative on the perpetual defense, trying to prove that they really do care about the problem enough to think about it thoroughly. Oh YEAH!? OH YEAH!?

More from SBS:

"This turns into the prototypical conservative/liberal argument:

L: At least I care about the problem!
C: But your solution is wrong!
L: But at least I care!
C: But you're wrong!
L: But I care!"

This is the perception of Conservative Thought. It has to change.

I think the engine of debate has been hijacked by Progressives. Our schools and institutions have indoctrinated J.Q. Public for a hundred+ years on the virtues of communal society (Socialism) . Never mind that it goes against the very fabric of our form of government (Democratic Republic) as it was first formed and intended. Progressives love a good crisis. "You never want a serious crisis to go to waste" ~ Rahm Emanuel - Barack Obama's Chief of Staff
and former US Representative for Illinois. If there isn't a crisis, they will invent one to force a discussion which they can immediately turn on any person (Racist!) (You don't care!)who tries grab the reins and cries "Whoa there! Let's not rush into anything!" (How's that stimulus working out for ya?)

As Sheldon Richman, editor of "The Freeman" and a contributor to "The Concise Encyclopedia of Economics" writes in his article "Are We Really all Healthcare Collectivists Now?"

quote: "“We have to do something about health care.”

The scariest word in that sentence is not something. It’s we. The first-person plural form is not merely a convenience, as in “We’re in for a cold winter.” It indicates that decisions about “the healthcare system” should be made collectively, with one decision binding everyone.

That’s collectivism.

So why is virtually everyone a collectivist when it comes to health care? I do not exaggerate. Every prominent participant in the current debate over how to "reform" the medical industry approaches the issue in collectivist terms. They have differences at the margin-tax increases versus tax credits, a government-run "public option" versus subsidized nonprofit cooperatives-but there is no disagreement that "we" must have a policy.

But why must we do anything about health care? Why can’t you do what you want, I do what I want, and he and she do what they want? Isn’t that what’s supposed to happen in a free society? Reformers would say that costs are rising too much and some people can’t afford insurance. But that is no answer. It tells us only that possibly ameliorable conditions exist, not that collectivism is a good approach.

When we see problems in other important markets, most of us don’t expect televised presidential town-hall meetings, congressional committees, and omnibus legislation to give us the answer. We individually adjust our behavior in the marketplace and anticipate that entrepreneurs will cater to us. Solutions, with inevitable tradeoffs, are micro, marginal, and tailored to individual needs, not macro, holistic, and procrustean. Out of this arises an orderly marketplace–without a conscious overall plan. No one has found a better way to make masses of people better off.

Why is health care different? Must we collectively reinvent the industry? The social knowledge problem that F. A. Hayek spelled out should make us wary of any collective response.

The reformers’ stock answer is that this is something only we, acting through the "democratic process," can handle. That’s an assertion. Where’s the proof? What if earlier collectivist decisions gave us rising medical and insurance costs?

In fact they did. Nearly every aspect of medicine and health insurance that the politicians say needs fixing is the result of “our”–that is, politicians’–previous attempts to fix something."

At the founding of our country, there were a myriad of problems to be faced by the new republic. It would be wise to reflect on what a couple of old geezers had to say about the federal government in that day.

Madison wrote: "The powers delegated by the proposed constitution to the federal government are few and defined."(If only that were still true Mr. Madison.)

I think Thomas Jefferson was the ultimate conservative voice. As President, he said: "The path we have to pursue is so quiet that we have nothing scarcely to propose [to Congress]. A noiseless course, not meddling with the affairs of others, unattractive of notice, is the mark that society is going on in happiness." ~ both quotes taken from W. Cleon Skousen’s, The Making of America, p. 247

I think that as conservatives, we should take the lead when we regain control of the House and Senate. I'm working on my wish list of agenda items. I will post those later. But for now the point is that we should be the ones pushing debate. We should be thoughtfully educating J.Q. Public that big government IS the problem and we need less of it. Repeal the laws that don't work. Enforce the ones that do. Stress self reliance as the only path to personal pride and liberty. We need to be true conservatives instead of trying to appease the left.

If we allow this country to be "fundamentally transformed"(Obama) into a socialist society, we won't be able to change it back. "Liberties lost are rarely found again." ~ me

To the Socialists/Liberals/Communists:
This is a Democratic Republic and if you people want to live in a Socialist or Communist country, you are free to leave. Just keep in mind, that the country you defect to may not let you come back, comrade.

That's it. I'm done for the day.
Time for lunch and a beer. Cheers!

Your Government Wants To Eat You

And just in time for Halloween!
A government cannot exist simply to serve itself. If the larger percentage of the voting population is employed or is dependent upon the government, then it stands to reason that those employees or dependents will never vote themselves out of those jobs or benefits.

How did we get here?

The government of The United States Of America has been expanding since its creation. By slow encroachments and itty bitty usurpations we are losing our ability and capacity to govern ourselves. What really makes me angry is the fact that the population is slitting its own throat!

Shouldn't we be more vigilant in our political education?

The founders warned of this very day when George Mason said "From the nature of man, we may be sure that those who have power in their hands will not give it up while they can retain it. On the contrary, we know that they will always, when they can, rather increase it." as quoted in W. Cleon Skousen’s, The Making of America, p. 247

Our government should not be in the welfare or healthcare business!
Jeffrey Ellis asks on his site The Thinker "[Are We] Robbing Peter To Pay Paul?" and then abruptly answers with this astute observation ~ “A government with the policy to rob Peter to pay Paul can be assured of the support of Paul.” — George Bernard Shaw
He then goes on to a thought provoking analysis into the question. I highly recommend the read.

And in an earlier post he questions the "The Economic Impact of the Size of Government"
Says Jeffery:
"The issue of size of government versus economic growth is a “goose that lays the golden eggs” type of problem. It takes prosperity to fund various social programs — welfare, Medicare, and any other entitlement program you would care to add to the list. The fundamental conflict is that the more of these programs that government institutes, the less prosperity the nation has to fund them. But to be fair, on the other hand, the more prosperity we have, the more income inequality we also tend to have (although in general almost everyone is better off)..."

To the question of wealth and entitlements, I would respond with a quote or two from Lincoln.

Lincoln said: "That some achieve great success, is proof to all that others can achieve it as well."
I think this was the original intent of the founders: We have the freedom to succeed, and the freedom to fail.

Lincoln again on the subject of self reliance: "Let not him who is houseless pull down the house of another, but let him work diligently and build one for himself, thus by example assuring that his own shall be safe from violence when built."
Lincoln seems to be hinting at anarchy stemming from an entitlement mentality here.

I understand that Jeffrey is coming at the problem from a purely logic based, Critical Thinking point of view, and I agree that we should be compassionate, but I cannot say that it is the role of government to provide these entitlements. Besides, I think the research he has done proves the point I am trying to make here.

Suffice to say that I believe this system is growing to be the world's largest pyramid scheme. Some will say that I am over simplifying, but there has to be a point of toppling the pyramid. Not everyone can be recipients of a government job or handout. The money to fund this monster comes from the working class.
Your government wants to eat you!

I think it's evident that a heckofa lot of level headed people have awakened due to the large numbers of anti-Obamacare / anti-big government protestors showing up at the town halls and tea parties. We have to keep educating the population to the corruption taking place within our government, and that if we keep feeding this monster, It will eventually eat us all.

Contract From America: A Tea-Party Fueled Attempt To Be Heard

>> October 6, 2009

A Houston lawyer looks to turn legislation back into a bottom-up process.
By Andrew Ian Dodge at Pajamas Media:

"Last month, a new effort to reconnect the populace with its public servants was launched: Contract From America.

This consultation exercise aims to gather ideas from the public on laws they would like to see passed or eliminated. The ideas will be boiled down to three in each policy area by a panel of tea party activists from all over the nation and then submitted to political leaders.

Considering the arrogance displayed by many members of Congress towards their constituents and their wishes, this project intends to make them aware of just how driven people are to see a change in governmental behavior.

An interview with Ryan Hecker, the head of Contract From America:

AD: What prompted you to create this project?

RH: In the past, public policy has been entirely a top-down affair. Politicians work with consultants and others to create public policy initiatives, for which the electorate either show support by re-electing the politician or reject by choosing his opponent. However, we have seen over the past decade that politicians have largely been bereft of economically conservative ideas. I created this website because I strongly believe that the citizenry has a lot of ideas to offer to politicians if given the chance to speak and make an impact. We no longer have to sit passively as politicians present their ideas to us. We can all help in creating a Contract From America that we can use to direct public policy in 2010 and beyond."

I like it a lot!
